Should I play it on Deck right now?
Pick the outcome you need. You get a straight verdict instead of a generic “yes, it runs”.
Verdicts are based on the official support status and early player reports, not a standardized benchmark.
What performance should you expect?
There is no official Deck benchmark yet, so this is an observed range, not a target.
Current observed range
Multiple reports- Lighter interiors and quiet areas
- Usually easier to run
- Normal exploration
- Around the 30 FPS class in some reports
- Dense, crowded districts
- Can fall noticeably below 30 FPS
- Worst reported launch-build areas
- Below 20 FPS has been observed
Community observations — not an official benchmark.
Observed performance risk
- Quieter interiorsLow
- Normal explorationMedium
- Crowded city areasHigh
- After fast travelKnown issue
Why can an apartment feel fine, but a busy district run much worse?
Dense NPC simulation, lighting and a large amount of saved world state all compete for CPU, memory and GPU time at once.
- NPC density
- Simulation
- Lighting
- World-state objects
CPU / memory / GPU pressure
This is also why lowering Texture Quality alone does not fix every drop.
Build settings for your goal
Answer two questions. You get a starting point, not a guaranteed preset.

Because
Your issue appears mainly in dense scenes, which are the heaviest areas.
Apply troubleshooting stepsStarting point, not a guaranteed preset. Update #2 just added Lighting Details, and the developers are still optimizing.

Why is Nivalis Nights running slowly on my Steam Deck?
Start from when the problem appears. Each branch ends in a concrete action.
- Is Lighting Details set high? Reduce it first.
- Are Shadows and Level of Detail high? Reduce them next.
- Still slow in busy areas? That points to scene and simulation pressure rather than one setting.
Game froze or closed unexpectedly
Reported by some Steam Deck players. Not confirmed as universal.
- Save regularly so a crash cannot cost you much progress.
- Update the game and SteamOS before troubleshooting further.
- Restart and retry the same location.
- If it reproduces, report the exact steps and area.
Good to know
Update #2 improved one specific save case: an unexpected crash while overwriting a save no longer loses the original save. This is not a general crash fix.
What changed for Steam Deck performance?
Only the Deck-relevant changes, not the full patch notes.
Update #1
- Character action, animation and physics performance improvements.
- Fixed progressive camera-related performance degradation.
- Fixed a Level of Detail slider bug.
Update #2
- Added a Light Culling system.
- Added the Lighting Details slider.
- Fixed several graphics settings.
- Fast-travel performance issue is now known and being worked on.
Update #2 also removed the Low Texture Quality option. Saves that used Low are moved to Medium, so older advice to set Textures to Low no longer applies.
Controls aren't working correctly?
These are community-tested steps, not official universal fixes. Some Deck players report no controller problem at all.
What to try
Multiple reports- Unplug any external controllers or joysticks.
- Test with Steam Input both enabled and disabled.
- Restart the game after changing input settings.
- Retest one known action before changing anything else.
Reported symptoms
Controller input not working, menu selection flicker, unusual analog movement, and conflicts with Steam Input or other joysticks have all been reported. The same threads also contain players with no such problem.
Controller support is not Deck support
The store's Full Controller Support badge only describes input. It does not mean the game is Steam Deck Verified, and it does not describe performance.

Proton & compatibility
Kept deliberately small until there is independent testing to publish.
- Recommended Proton version
- Not yet independently verified
- Forced compatibility tool
- Do not change unless troubleshooting
Steam Deck runs the Windows build through Proton; there is no native Linux build. Once reliable tests exist, this section will list the tested Proton version, boot and save results, and known issues.
Need a more stable alternative?
Nivalis Nights is officially available on GeForce NOW. If local Deck performance does not work for you, cloud play is the more stable handheld option while optimization continues.
See GeForce NOW on the platforms hubUsing mods on Steam Deck?
Mod installation and compatibility can add another troubleshooting layer, especially through Proton.

- Is Nivalis Nights Steam Deck Verified?
- No verified badge currently exists. Steam shows the compatibility rating as Unknown, and the developers state that full support will not be available at launch.
- Does Nivalis Nights run on Steam Deck?
- It can run, but official full Deck support is not available yet and current performance varies significantly by scene.
- What FPS does it get?
- There is no official benchmark. Launch-period player reports range around the 20–30+ FPS class depending on location and setup, and crowded areas are the main problem.
- What are the best settings?
- There is no permanent best preset. Start with the settings builder above, then adjust Lighting Details, Shadows and Level of Detail first.
- Why did FPS suddenly drop after fast travel?
- Fast travel can trigger a known performance regression. Save after arriving, reload that save, then check performance again.
- Will Steam Deck support improve?
- The developers state that Steam Deck performance improvements are ongoing, but no date for full support has been announced.
